Revolutionary icon Sarkis Dkhrouni
Today marks the anniversary of the assassination of the revolutionary icon Sarkis Dkhrouni, one of the most prominent Armenian figures who participated in the Great Syrian Revolution (1925-1927). Artin Madaian describes the details of that day in his book "Life on the Barricades":
On January 17, 1929, Sarkis Dkhrouni was treacherously assassinated . He was a stubborn fighter, a man of principle and unwavering faith. That day, I had an appointment with him, and as I was on my way to his house, I saw the police gathered. The shock was immense: Dkhrouni's body lay on the ground, blood flowing from it.
Later on we went to Hotel-Dieu Hospital and his martyrdom was confirmed. It was natural for us to coordinate with our comrades in the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party to respond to this savage crime. We agreed with Mihran Safarian (one of the leaders of the SDHP Party) to call for a general strike in the camp.
The next day, the procession started from the beginning of the Armenian refugee camp, and the comrades carried banners in French and Armenian condemning the crime. At that point, the police intervened to confiscate the banners, but we did not comply.
Sarkis was mourned by Mirhan Damadian, Misak Vahouni, Mihran Safarian, and the comrades in the Communist Party Fouad Chamali and Youssef Yezbek. A speech was delivered calling for unity and cohesion.
The number of participants in the final farewell to Commander Dkhrouni reached about 20,000 people. After 96 years of his martyrdom, he remains alive in the conscience of all the free and the revolutionaries. Glory to you, Sarkis
